First Day Handout

                                     Every week I will post exercises and recordings so you can listen and practice.
Book:                           You don't need to buy a book; however, you must a buy a three-ring binder
                                     (页夹, capeta, скоросшиватель) for your papers and bring it every day.             
Tests:                           You must take tests throughout* the semester. * 穿, durante todo, в течение
                                     If you don't pass your test, you must take it again. You must learn all the irregular simple past verb forms. You may not go to Level 6 if you do not know them.
Punctuality*:               * , puntualidad, пунктуальность  You must come to class on time. If you must come late because you take your child to school in the morning, tell me now. I will put your name on my list. If you must leave early, tell me at the beginning of class, not when you are leaving.
Seating and                  You must sit where I tell you to sit. You must study and practice with other
pair/group work:          students in this class. You may not just work alone.
Cell phones,                 Turn off your phone or put it on 'vibrate' (颤动, vibrar, вибри́ровать). Do not answer
music, and videos:       your phone in class. Leave the room and talk in the hall. You may not make video recordings in class.


Cheating:                     If you cheat ( , copiar/hacer trampa, списывать) on a test, I will take your test away and give you a 0%. Cheating is dishonest ( , poco honrado, нечестный) and shameful ( , vergonzoso, позорный). In the U.S., universities often expel (kick out, 把…开除, expulsar, исключать) students who cheat.
Respect others!!              In our class, you must respect ( , respetar, уважать) and work with students who are different from you. Some students come from different countries or cultures (文化, culturas, культура) than you. Some have different sexual orientations (性取向, orientaciones sexuales, Сексуальная ориентация). Some are older or younger, and some have handicaps (残疾的, minusválidos, физическая неполноценность). If you make fun of (嘲笑,嘲弄, burlarse de, издеваться) or insult (辱骂, insultar/injuriar, оскорблять) other students, I may ask you to leave class. City College may expel you (开除, 把…除名, expulsar, исключать) if you continue. If a student is harassing (不断打扰, acosar, изводить) you, you must tell me so I can help you.

By the end of the semester, you should be able to:
1.  understand the general idea and some details (细节, detalles, деталь) of long conversations
2.  understand and talk about everyday topics, such as housing, illness, accidents and emergencies, work, transportation, and shopping
3. understand and use new vocabulary related to (=about) the everyday topics in #2 above
4.  a.  read and understand materials written for English learners
     b.  read and understand real materials (i.e., your ESL teacher hasn't changed the materials so the language is easier for you to read and understand)
5.  use the following grammar:
     a.  simple present tense, present continuous, simple past, past continuous, future with will, present perfect
     b.  phrasal verbs (=two-part verbs)
     c.  comparative and superlative adjectives
     d.  used to + base form for habitual (=repeated) past events
     e.  gerunds and infinitives
     f.   and…too/and…either
     g.  forming yes/no questions and wh- questions in the predicate
     h.  must not and don't have to
